Buoy a shipwreck
Service Project

Service Project Description

Chris of Troop 473 properly buoyed a 130 year old wooden schooner shipwreck by placing a one ton sinker next to the wreck upon which to hook the 1 inch polypropolene rope. This rope leads up to an engraved safety buoy 15 feet under the surface with information about the wreck. From there, the rope goes to the surface where he placed a high-flyer buoy clearly marking the name of the wreck. Chris had to work with government agencies to attain the correct permits. He wrote and received a grant to pay for his project. He was fortunate enough to have the US Coast Guard help him to place his sinker. Including the hours worked by the Coast Guard crew on this mission, his project totaled 356 hours.
