Comment Sand with the grain, not against it for the final sanding.
Sand against the grain only when you are trying to remove a lot of wood.
Use primer that can be sanded. Sealing the car with primer will give you a better paint finish. Make sure the primer is sandable - some aren't.
Sand between coats of finish on your pinewood derby car. Many finishes can be sanded with steel wool and polished with felt. (Read the label)
