CommentI asked the man in our district who owns the nicest aluminum track what he has observed about aerodynamics. He runs thousands of cars down his track every year, and said that there are many things you can do to speed up a car for big performance gains, but aerodynamics doesn't make that big of a difference.
He laughed and talked about a time when a boys showed up with an unpainted, ontouched block, attached the wheels, added graphite, and won the race that night.
So the answer to whether aerodynamics are important is that an aerodynamic shape has only a marginal performance gain compared to other speed tricks.
