CommentWe have noticed over years of participating in pinewood derbies in Cub Scout Packs all over the USA, that the boys and their families seem to get the most out of the races where the restrictions to creativity and performance are removed.
The boys learn a lot from thinking and talking about principles of friction, potential energy, aerodynamics, etc.
So we enforce a weight limit, maximum car length, and a few structural guidelines (e.g. the frame of the car has to be the pinewood derby block.) and then let the boys do whatever they want from there.
The boys enjoy shaping their wheels and thinking of creative ideas to get better performance out of their cars.
