TitleTilted Axles
CategorySpeed Tips
CommentThis is a difficult pinewood derby trick, so only attempt it if you are a veteran racer, or if you have lots of time to tinker before the race.
Slope the axles downward into the car (like a low-rider.) When the pinewood derby car races down the track, the car's weight will push the wheels higher up on the axle so there won't be any wheel-to-car contact friction.
This trick can backfire if you don't do it right, but it can really make a difference if done correctly. I almost didn't submit it because I am afraid some over-eager Dad will try it and then end up with a crestfallen boy when the car has trouble on the track. Only do this if you have time to test it carefully!
